Want to Become a BPD Officer?

Requirements for police officers differ from state to state, but in Missouri, sworn Patrol officers are certified P.O.S.T. (Peace officers standards and training), meeting the standards of training set by the state. The P.O.S.T. academy prepares someone to be hired by a law enforcement agency but their training continues once hired.

Here in Boonville, a new Officer will enter an intensive 12-week Field Training Program. This program teaches the new officer the geographical layout of the city, Boonville Municipal Codes, BPD policy and procedures, and reinforces the skills learned at the academy. At the conclusion of the 12 weeks, an officer in training must show proficiency in the above categories before working independently. Employment applications are available online and can be turned into the Police Station, 401 East Morgan. When a position is available it will be posted online and in the newspaper.

The Right Place for You

The Patrol division is responsible for protecting the city and is accomplished in a number of ways. The primary responsibility of an Officer is to respond to the calls generated by the public, but they also do traffic enforcement, business checks, building checks, occupied and unoccupied vehicle checks, park checks, motorist assists, community policing, etc.

In addition to these duties, many Officers have specialized training in other areas, such as: accident reconstruction, bike patrol, DARE program, Field Training Officer, and Clandestine Laboratory response (meth labs). Several of our officers have achieved instructor status in Law Enforcement and Public Safety skills, including defensive tactics, intermediate weapons, firearms instructors, driving instructors, DUI detection and standardized field sobriety testing, accident investigation, and much more.

The Investigation Division supports the Patrol Division by conducting investigations of reported criminal activity in Boonville. Two full time detectives are assigned cases taken by patrol officers that require further investigations for a variety of reasons.

An investigation may include conducting interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects, analyzing information for validity, reliability and accuracy, and compiling a factual and comprehensive case to be submitted to the court. Detectives may also respond to and process major crime scenes to ensure that the highest level of investigation and evidence collection methods are achieved.

Detectives will frequently complete processing of physical evidence and prepare evidence for submission to the Missouri Highway Patrol Crime Lab.

The investigations Division is augmented with personnel assigned to the Mustang Drug Task Force. BPD actively works with and contributes to the Drug Task Force which operates in the cities of Columbia, Fulton, and Jefferson City and Boone, Callaway, Cole, and Cooper counties.
